Zimbabwe childrens games of the 90s - Hwishu
A ball game similar to cricket in concept where you have two teams, ‘X’ represents one team and the dots [C] are the opposition. It can be played by an even number of players from four upwards. The more the merrier.
The game consists of team [X] which gathers in a large circle where it is on the offensive.
The defending team [C] stands in strategic positions behind the score line [F].
Player A then rolls the ball towards team X.
A player from [X] then comes out and kicks the ball as far as possible before the whole team runs towards the score line and back to the home base where they are safe. A player kicks the ball only once for each roll.
One completed cycle will be worth 1 point.
The defensive team then collect the ball and try to strike a player before he makes it back to the home base.
Players can also be eliminated if they kick the ball in the air and the opposition catches it in the air, bounces it and shout "Hwishu!”
If a player kicks outside a defined boundary ( usually someone’s yard) or kicks the ball and it fails to go past the score line then he is eliminated.
Once the offensive team accrues a certain number of points then those who have been eliminated get a second ‘life’.
Once games limit is reached, everyone who was eliminated would have to run from the sidelines into home base for a second life.
The opposing team then attempts to strike the players running back to home base before they do so.
Once all have been eliminated the two teams then swap sides.
