Showcase - Featured artists in the Inaugural Women's Edition

The Women's edition of the POVO journal was the brainchild of Rudo Chakanyuka, who was also responsible for curating and managing the compilation. It also marked the launch of two journals in a year. The Women's issue will only showcase work from women and give them a space and a voice. As usual we try to cover as many genres as possible – illustration, photography, design. We also found out that there are very few women illustrators and photographers and we will continue to search and encourage more to showcase their work, taking advantage of the internet too.

Deborah, the Game Changer

Sometimes even ‘woman’ is a label, a ceiling you have been given, and unless you see yourself beyond someone else’s notion and vision of what you are you will never grow beyond that. Unless you see ‘woman’ as warrior, leader, influencer, one that transforms - and transcends - the norm, unless you realise that even the smallest action she takes is powerful and transforming to those around her, unless she sees that in herself, she is in danger of being defined by the world around her.

The Midnight Hour

I am writing this at 12:39 PM at midnight, a moment of great clarity for me, when   I suddenly remember who I am when doubt and fear disappear from my consciousness. Who am I? I have been trying to answer that question for close to ten years now. Ten years as a Zimbabwean female designer. Year after year that same question and others – am I making a difference? What am I doing here? Who is going to care in another ten years what I was selling? Will it be about the numbers; how much money we made?
